Understanding your symptoms
Food Intolerance vs Food Allergy —
What's the Difference?
Many people confuse food allergies and food intolerances — but they are fundamentally different conditions, driven by different immune mechanisms and producing different symptoms on different timescales. Food intolerance is estimated to affect up to 45% of the UK population — yet most people have never been tested.
⚠ Food Allergy — IgE mediated
Immediate reaction
Involves the IgE antibody. Produces an immediate, often severe immune response — typically within minutes. Symptoms include hives, swelling, vomiting and anaphylaxis. Affects less than 2% of UK adults. Usually already known to the sufferer. Diagnosed by your GP.
Delayed reaction
Involves IgG antibodies. Produces a delayed reaction — anywhere from a few hours to 72 hours after eating the trigger food. This delay makes it almost impossible to identify without testing. Affects up to 45% of the population. Causes a wide range of persistent symptoms often attributed to other causes.
Symptoms food intolerance can cause

Our Two Food
Intolerance Tests
Both tests use a simple pinprick blood sample — no venous blood draw required. Most clients barely notice the process.
The standard test gives you results in the same appointment. The Gold test is sent to a specialist laboratory for a comprehensive 200+ food analysis with a follow-up nurse consultation.

What to do with your results
Understanding Your Results —
What Happens Next
1
Discuss with your nurse
Immediately after your standard test, your nurse will go through your results — explaining which foods showed a reaction, the severity (scored 1+ to 4+) and which are most likely contributing to your symptoms.
2
Elimination phase — 6 to 8 weeks
Eliminate identified foods for 6–8 weeks to allow IgG antibody levels to fall and the gut lining to recover. Your nurse will help you plan a realistic approach that keeps you nutritionally balanced.
3
Reintroduction
Reintroduce foods one at a time to identify which cause symptoms and which can be tolerated again. Some intolerances resolve once the gut has healed — others require longer-term avoidance.
4
Ongoing gut support
Food intolerance often signals underlying gut health issues. Your nurse may recommend colonic hydrotherapy, probiotic supplementation or dietary supplements to support the healing process alongside your elimination diet.
Common questions
Food Intolerance Testing FAQ
Is this the same as an allergy test?
No. Allergy tests measure IgE antibodies (immediate reactions). Our test measures IgG antibodies — delayed food intolerances. These are completely different immune mechanisms. If you suspect a true food allergy such as anaphylaxis or immediate hives, see your GP for IgE allergy testing.
How accurate is the test?
We use the same highly sensitive IgG immunoassay technique as specialist laboratories. Results are interpreted by your nurse in the context of your symptoms — which is why the nurse consultation is included in the price. A positive reaction doesn't always mean that food is your primary symptom driver, which is why we discuss results rather than simply handing you a printout.
Can I eat normally before the test?
Yes — ideally eat normally for several weeks beforehand. Eliminating suspected foods before the test can reduce IgG levels and produce false negatives. If you've already avoided certain foods for 2–3 weeks or more, let your nurse know at the consultation.
Is the pinprick painful?
A pinprick blood sample is taken from your fingertip — a quick, momentary sting that most clients barely notice. No venous blood draw is required. The amount of blood needed is very small.
How long does the appointment take?
The standard test appointment takes approximately 75 minutes in total — a brief consultation before the test, 40 minutes for results, then a nurse consultation to discuss your results and recommend next steps.
Can children have the test?
Please call us to discuss. Food intolerance testing for children requires parental consent and a slightly different approach to result interpretation. Our nurses will advise on whether the test is appropriate for your child's age and symptoms.
