The basics
What Are Vitamin Injections and How Do They Work?
What is an intramuscular vitamin injection?
An intramuscular (IM) vitamin injection involves injecting a vitamin or nutrient solution directly into muscle tissue — typically the upper arm or gluteal muscle. From the muscle, the vitamin absorbs rapidly and completely into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system entirely. The injection itself takes seconds and is administered by one of our RGN registered nurses.
Why are injections more effective than taking vitamins orally?
When you swallow a vitamin tablet or capsule, it must survive stomach acid, be broken down in the small intestine and compete with hundreds of other compounds to be absorbed through the intestinal wall. This typically results in only 20–30% of the nutrient reaching your bloodstream — and often less for people with IBS, Crohn's disease, SIBO or coeliac disease.
An IM injection deposits the vitamin directly into muscle tissue, achieving near 100% bioavailability. The full dose reaches your cells, typically producing effects within 24–72 hours.

How is an IM injection different from an IV drip?
IM injection — takes seconds. A single vitamin is injected directly into the muscle. No cannula, no drip bag. Ideal for targeted maintenance doses. From £35.
IV vitamin drip — takes 30–120 minutes. A cannula is placed in your arm and a blend of vitamins, minerals and amino acids is infused directly into the bloodstream. Ideal for broader, more complex health goals. From £160.
Many clients have both — an IV drip for a comprehensive boost, and regular IM injections for targeted ongoing maintenance.

Safety & side effects
Are Vitamin Injections Safe? What Are the Risks?
Are vitamin injections safe?
Yes — when administered by a qualified medical professional. At Central Healthcare, all injections are given by RGN registered nurses with over 20 years' clinical experience. We use sterile, single-use disposable equipment and conduct a full health assessment before every treatment.
IM vitamin injections are a well-established medical procedure. B12 injections in particular have been used by the NHS for decades to treat pernicious anaemia and B12 deficiency.

Are there any side effects?
Side effects are uncommon. The most frequent is mild soreness or bruising at the injection site, which typically resolves within 24–48 hours. Some clients experience a brief warm or flushed sensation after certain injections — particularly B complex — which passes quickly.
Serious adverse reactions are very rare when injections are administered by a qualified nurse following a proper health assessment.

Can vitamin injections interact with my medications?
Some vitamins can interact with certain medications:
B12 — may be affected by metformin and proton pump inhibitors, but the injection bypasses the absorption mechanism these drugs interfere with, making it more rather than less appropriate for people on these medications.
Vitamin D — may interact with thiazide diuretics and certain heart medications.
Folate — may interact with methotrexate and certain epilepsy medications.
We take a full medication history before every treatment. Always disclose all medications when you book.

Who should not have vitamin injections?
Contraindications are few but include known allergy to the specific vitamin preparation, certain blood disorders, pregnancy (depends on the vitamin — our nurses will advise) and active infection at the injection site.
If you have any medical condition or take regular medication, call us before booking and our nurses will advise whether treatment is appropriate for you.

Is the injection painful?
Most clients describe it as a brief, mild pinch — less uncomfortable than a blood test. The injection is over in seconds. Some clients feel mild achiness at the site for 24 hours afterwards, but this is uncommon and temporary. If you have a needle phobia, let us know when you call — our nurses are experienced at making the process as comfortable as possible.

How do I know if I need a B12 injection?
You may benefit from a B12 injection if you experience persistent fatigue, brain fog, low mood, numbness or tingling in hands or feet, muscle weakness, pale skin or mouth ulcers.
You're at higher risk of B12 deficiency if you are vegan or vegetarian, over 50, taking metformin or proton pump inhibitors, or have Crohn's disease, IBS, coeliac disease or a history of bariatric surgery.
A blood test is not required before your first B12 injection, though recent blood results help us tailor treatment.

How quickly does a B12 injection work? How long does it last?
Most clients notice improved energy, mood and mental clarity within 24–72 hours. The full effect builds over 1–2 weeks as the body replenishes its stores and begins producing red blood cells more effectively.
For maintenance, most clients come monthly. Those with severe deficiency or conditions that impair absorption may come every 1–3 months.

Does a biotin injection really work for hair loss?
For hair loss caused by biotin deficiency or suboptimal biotin levels — yes. Biotin is essential for keratin synthesis, the structural protein that forms hair, nails and skin. Without adequate biotin, keratin production is impaired, leading to thinning and brittleness.
Oral biotin supplements are poorly absorbed by many people. IM injection delivers the full therapeutic dose directly into the bloodstream. Visible improvements typically build over a course of 4–6 monthly injections.

My GP says my vitamin D is low — should I have an injection?
Very likely yes. Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common in the North East — limited sunlight for much of the year means many residents cannot produce adequate vitamin D through sunlight exposure alone.
Standard oral supplements are inadequate for many people with confirmed deficiency. A single IM injection raises and sustains levels for months — far more reliably than daily tablets. Call us to book.

What does the glutathione injection do for skin?
Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant. For skin it works in two ways:
Antioxidant protection — neutralises free radicals that drive skin ageing, dullness and uneven texture.
Melanin regulation — inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production, resulting in a brighter, more even skin tone over a course of treatments.
Oral glutathione is almost entirely broken down in the gut. IM or IV delivery is the only effective route. Skin results typically build over 6–8 monthly injections.

What is the slim shot and does it help with weight loss?
Our slim shot is a lipotropic injection — a blend of methionine, inositol and choline (MIC) combined with B vitamins. These compounds support fat breakdown and transport in the liver, improving metabolic efficiency.
The slim shot is not a standalone weight loss treatment. It works best alongside a calorie-controlled diet and regular exercise, helping break through plateaus and supporting fat metabolism during a programme.

What's the difference between methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin B12?
Cyanocobalamin is the synthetic form found in most supplements and standard NHS injections. The body must convert it to active forms before use — some people with MTHFR gene variants cannot make this conversion effectively.
Methylcobalamin is one of the two active forms used directly by the body. No conversion required, preferentially retained in tissues and particularly important for neurological function.
At Central Healthcare, we use methylcobalamin — the most bioavailable and neurologically active form available.

Before, during & after your appointment
What to Expect at Your Injection Appointment
Do I need to prepare before my injection?
Very little preparation is needed. We recommend staying hydrated, eating a light meal beforehand, wearing clothing with easy access to your upper arm, and bringing any recent blood test results. Tell us about any medications or supplements when you call to book.
No fasting is required.
No fasting is required.
How long does the appointment take?
The injection itself takes seconds. For first-time clients, a brief nurse consultation takes 5–10 minutes beforehand. Total appointment time is typically 15–20 minutes for a first visit, and just a few minutes for subsequent drop-in injections once we know you.
Can I drive afterwards?
Yes. Vitamin injections do not impair your ability to drive. Most clients feel completely normal — or better — immediately after and can return to work straight away. Your nurse will check how you're feeling before you leave.
When will I feel the effects and how long do they last?
B12 & B complex — energy and mood improvements often within 24–72 hours. Effect typically lasts 4–6 weeks.
Vitamin D — builds over 4–8 weeks as blood levels restore.
Biotin — visible hair and nail improvements build over a course of 4–6 monthly injections.
Glutathione — skin-brightening results build over 6–8 sessions.
Slim shot — works progressively alongside diet and exercise.

Glutathione — skin-brightening results build over 6–8 sessions.
Slim shot — works progressively alongside diet and exercise.
What should I do after my injection?
Normal activities can be resumed immediately. Stay well hydrated, avoid strenuous exercise on the day of a glutathione injection, and follow any dietary or supplement advice your nurse provides. If the injection site is sore, a cold compress for a few minutes will help.

Can I have more than one injection at the same appointment?
Yes, in most cases. Popular combinations include B12 + Vitamin D, B12 + Biotin, Glutathione + Vitamin C, and Slim shot + B Complex. Your nurse will advise on appropriate combinations and administer each to a different injection site.
Should I combine injections with IV drips or colonics?
Many of our clients do — and there's real synergy. Our most popular combination is the Colonic + B12 injection package (£100). A cleaner colon improves overall nutrient absorption — combining it with a B12 injection amplifies the energy-boosting effect of both treatments.
Talk to your nurse at your first appointment and they'll recommend the most effective combination for your specific goals.

Do I need a blood test before my injections?
Not required for most standard injections. If you have recent blood results showing a confirmed deficiency, bring them along — they help us tailor your treatment. For high-dose vitamin D we may recommend checking levels before and after the first injection. For folate, we usually recommend a blood test to confirm the appropriate form before commencing treatment.
