BEFORE YOUR TREATMENT
-
No fasting is necessary. We do advise drinking plenty of water in the day or two before your appointment. You don't need to change your diet beforehand, unless you're already following a detox programme. Your nurse will advise on diet and nutrition after your first session.
-
It's helpful to avoid heavy meals, caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours before your session. Staying hydrated and eating light, healthy meals on the day can enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.
-
You'll lie comfortably on your side in a private treatment room. A small lubricated tube is gently inserted into the rectum — most clients feel nothing at all due to the lubricating gel used. Warm filtered water is then introduced in a series of gentle flushes. Your nurse performs a gentle abdominal massage throughout to help release waste. The treatment lasts approximately 30–45 minutes.
-
No. The treatment is generally comfortable. You may feel a slight sensation of fullness or mild cramping as the water enters the colon, but this passes quickly as waste is released. The vast majority of clients find it far more comfortable than they expected.
-
Yes , we use highly filtered water that passes through separate filters before being heated to the correct temperature. This water is capable of absorbing and flushing more toxins from the colon. Tap water is not used because it already contains numerous chemicals and inorganic substances.

DURING & AFTER TREATMENT
Safety, Results & Recovery
-
Yes. When carried out by a qualified practitioner, colonic hydrotherapy is a safe procedure. At Central Healthcare all treatments are performed by RGN registered nurses with over 20 years' experience. We use sterile, single-use disposable equipment, strictly filtered water, and follow clinical hygiene protocols throughout.
-
Most clients feel lighter, less bloated and more energetic immediately after treatment. You can return to your normal daily routine straight away. Some clients experience a few extra bowel movements in the hours following — this is normal and not uncomfortable. For others, the bowel may take a day or two to move again after the treatment.
-
Most clients experience no side effects. Some may feel slightly tired or experience mild cramping as the body adjusts. These effects typically resolve within a few hours. We provide a complimentary probiotic supplement after every session to support your gut bacteria.
-
This is a very common concern. Yes, some good bacteria will be removed, but so will a great deal of harmful bacteria. In a healthy bowel, good bacteria fully replenishes itself within 2–3 days. We include a complimentary probiotic supplement after every treatment, and your nurse may recommend a course of probiotics if appropriate.
-
No, quite the opposite. Colonic irrigation exercises the bowel by stimulating contraction and relaxation. This helps to tone and reshape the colon and can actually improve elimination over time. It is non-habit-forming.
-
Almost never. Most of us have a considerable amount of impacted material in the colon even if we have daily bowel movements. Each session moves some of the waste and allows the water to reach further into the colon. How many sessions you need depends on your personal goals, which your nurse will discuss with you at your consultation.
TREATMENT PLANNING
How many Sessions & Frequency
-
This depends on your individual goals and health concerns. Some clients feel significant results after one session; others benefit from a short course of treatments over several weeks. Your nurse will recommend a tailored plan at your consultation. Many clients return for regular maintenance sessions once or twice a year.
-
The frequency depends on your goals and overall health. Some clients come for an initial course — typically 2–4 sessions over a few weeks — then return seasonally for maintenance. Others book as needed. Your nurse will give personalised recommendations at each visit based on your progress.
-
An enema only cleanses the lower portion of the colon, using a single infusion of water. Colonic hydrotherapy cleanses the entire large intestine using a series of controlled flushes, and is performed in a clinical setting under the supervision of a trained nurse — making it significantly more thorough and comfortable.
-
Colonic hydrotherapy is not a standalone weight-loss treatment, but some clients report feeling lighter after sessions. More significantly, a healthier colon improves digestion and metabolism — which, combined with healthy eating and exercise, can help overcome weight loss plateaus. We support many clients with personalised dietary advice alongside their colonic programme.
-
Yes, it can actually be a very good time for a colonic, as it may help release waste and ease discomfort associated with your period. Most clients are happy to proceed and find it beneficial.
